The south west of England encompasses the counties of Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall and features some of the most beautiful places in the UK, including pretty Cotswold villages and fabulous Cornish beaches, so it is hardly surprising that large numbers of people choose to make this gloriously scenic part of England their home. But is it possible to find affordable houses in the south west of England, or have prices been driven too high for the majority of buyers?

Like the rest of the UK, prices in the south west have been affected by the collapse of the property market. However, tourism plays a big part in the local economy for large swathes of the region, which helps to keep the local property market fairly buoyant, particularly for holiday lets. This means property prices in the south west are still expensive compared to the rest of the UK, although the average property price is lower than in London and the south east. However, there are large regional variations and it is still possible to find a good selection of affordable housing in Bristol and other property hotspots in the south west, as long as you do your homework and are prepared to spend some time looking for the perfect property.

If you are seeking affordable family homes in Plymouth and other popular parts of Devon and Cornwall, whether for buy to let investment or as a family home, it pays to spend plenty of time in the area visiting estate agents and researching the local property market. Generally speaking, the closer houses are to the main tourist resorts and areas of local interest, the more expensive they are likely to be, but if you are prepared to live further away from the coast in a more rural area, you will enjoy a much greater choice of reasonably priced houses for sale.

Gutters perform an important role in helping keep water out of your basement. Gutters that are correctly installed will catch excess water coming off of your roof and channel it away from your home’s foundation. This is extremely important because a musty smelling or mouldy basement is definitely not appreciated.

The installation of long seamless gutters or highly decorative gutters, such as copper, is best left to the professionals. Sectional gutters (usually made of vinyl or aluminium) can be easily installed by the average homeowner.

It is of importance that you look at the outside of your home and determine how and where you would like the gutters to channel the water. Ideally, you want the gutter to catch the water as it comes off the roof and channel it to an area where it will drain away from your home.

You should measure along the edges of your roof. More often than not, Gutters come in 10-foot sections, so measuring the edges of your roof will determine how many sections of gutter you will need. You may want to add an extra 10% to your measurements for wastage and mistakes.

You then need to combine the roof measurement with your gutter layout plan to calculate the number of other gutter components you will need corners, elbows, end pieces, drop outlets, for example. You will also need mounting brackets for every 24 to 30 inches of run.

When it comes to installing your gutters, begin at the end of your roof away from the downspout location, you must measure down 1/2 inch from the edge of your roof and mark it. Move to the downspout end and repeat the process again, measuring and marking down 1/2 inch from the roof edge. You should check and ensure that the marks you have drawn are level with each other, and adjust the marks accordingly if not.

Now, calculate the slope you will need so that the water in your gutters will flow towards the downspout. (Gutters should slope down 1/16 inch for every foot of run or 5/8 inch for every 10 feet.) You should measure down this distance from the first mark at the downspout end.

Draw a chalk line from the lower mark at the downspout end to the single mark at the far end. This chalk line will be your guide line when it comes to installing your gutters.

Install the components of your gutter system, (drop outlets, corners and mounting brackets.) The job is made easier if you use a power drill with a screwdriver bit and rust resistant screws. Working from your ladder, you must then install individual sections of gutter into the mounting brackets and join the different sections with gutter connectors. Make sure a hacksaw is used to cut gutter sections to fit when necessary.

It is important to then run a bead of silicone caulk between the gutter sections. This prevents the water from leaking through the seams.

Install an elbow at the bottom of the drop outlet, then measure, cut and install the downspout to the base of the drop outlet. Finally, use mounting brackets to firmly attach the downspout to the side of the house. It may be worthwhile checking that the downspout is secure after the attachment. You may want to wish for some rain, so you can sit back and watch your handy work happen.

Painting is one of the easiest DIY jobs, but it should be done carefully to ensure you don’t need to repaint a room or exterior wall. It is a great way to spend an afternoon and there is an enormous sense of satisfaction once a plain room is transformed into something warm and comfortable. But when is the best time to paint, and does it depend on what you are painting?

Ask any builder when the best time to paint an exterior wall is and you will get the same answer: summer. The warm summer months are usually the best time in which to repaint the exterior of your home, as there is less risk of rain or wind ruining your handiwork than at other times of the year.

Interior walls and rooms can be done at pretty much any time of the year; there is no risk of a sudden rain washing away freshly applied paint, and the wind will not blow any leaves onto your surfaces. Even when painting an interior room, however, it is usually best to try and avoiding painting on rainy days, as the excess moisture in the air can cause the paint to dry slower than normal. If you are in doubt about any aspect of painting, contact a tradesman who will be able to help.

The bathroom is the room in your home that requires the most privacy. As curtains tend to collect dust and encourage the growth of mould and mildew, easy-to-clean, elegant, practical window blinds are a perfect way to create the privacy you need without sacrificing style and beauty in your home. Window blinds should be practical, stylish, attractive and easy to care for. In a bathroom, practicality and ease of care are paramount concerns, but of course you’ll want style and elegance as well. Bathroom blinds need to be made of moisture-resistant materials. Fortunately there are many material choices.

Vertical blinds can create a lovely, simple elegance, and they come in a variety of colours and textures to match any home’s décor. PVC vertical blinds come in any shade imaginable and custom-made blinds can be made to fit any window, making it easy to choose the perfect bathroom blinds for your home. Roman blinds come in a variety of materials, colours and styles as well, making them a good choice for conveying a sense of subtle, casual elegance.

Choosing the perfect bathroom blind is as easy as knowing your personal style, and choosing the blinds that best match your home’s décor. The material you choose in the bathroom is important. In a humid environment, it’s important that your blinds are practical as well as elegant and stylish. Faux wood blinds and bamboo blinds are both excellent choices for bathrooms. Since the material is mould and mildew resistant and easy to clean, it’s practical in a humid environment. The vast array of colours and shades make bathroom blinds the perfect accessory for your décor. For a ground-floor bathroom, you may wish to choose lined blackout blinds, which offer complete privacy, as well as controlling ambient light and temperature.

With two major organisations, the British Darts Organisation and the Professional Darts Corporation, both organising top-level professional darts singles competitions; there is no shortage of competitions to bet on. Both organisations hold world championships, and both maintain ranked lists of players. The up to date rankings can help bettors predict what players will dominate the tournaments.

In addition to the tour and open events, the PDC also run a league format competition in the UK, the Premier League. The competition starts in February each year and ends in May. Like the World Championships, it is dominated by Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, winner of more than 150 professional tournaments and one of the founder members of the PDC.

However, given the wide number of competitions, even Phil Taylor cannot be expected to win everything. True, he has won the Grand Prix ten times, but he has also been knocked out in the first round on three occasions, so before placing your bets you should ensure that you are up to speed on all the latest darts betting news.

GCSE Physics makes things easy for you by grouping together key subjects under different modules, which is common for the three major exam boards (Edexcel, OCR, AQA). Each exam will test you on your knowledge of the relevant physics module, though you will also be tested generally on your problem solving ability and understanding of the scientific process (independent/dependent variables, repeatability etc.).

Before you start your revision, make sure you know what your exam board expects of you in the examination, and what marks are awarded for what things you write down. For example, the AQA Physics specification has recently been overhauled, and now marks more heavily for remembering equations, but less heavily on remembering physical units. Specifications can be found on the website of your board.

Your revision should start by going over your module in full, though not in too much detail. Read over the entirety of your class notes to jog your memory, and use revision guides and Internet sources to help solidify your understanding.

As the exam looms, do as many sample and past paper questions as you can, to root out gaps in your knowledge and understanding, before the exam does it for you. Make cue cards with the most fundamental points and equations, and use them to test your memory. Keep doing this until you can remember them thoroughly.

The key to understanding GCSE physics questions lies in knowing and understanding the relevant equations, applying them in real world situations, and understanding the relationships between physical variables. You also need to know how to interpret graphs, and appreciate when certain equations apply and when they don’t. The best advice for the exam is to read the questions carefully, and to use common sense if a question catches you off guard.

A water feature can transform your garden, providing a feeling of tranquillity or helping to create a stunning visual centrepiece when entertaining outdoors. Here are some tips for choosing a water feature that is just right for you:

•Choose a feature that matches your home. Your garden is an extension of your home, so think about a water feature that might go well with the theme/colours you already have.

•Personal taste is paramount when choosing any water feature. Do not simply buy the first thing you see; take your time and find something you like and will enjoy for years to come.

•Make sure that the water feature fits the kind of garden you have. For example, a garden with lots of colours and tropical plants should have a water feature that will calm the area down and create a balance.

•Contemporary gardens can have either older pieces or go with a more up-to-date style.

•Older, more formal gardens should use a water feature as a centrepiece, so that it helps draw visitors in to the space. Think about the use of symmetry and consider symmetrical water fountains or ponds that catch the eye.

Bongs are used for smoking herbs; they feature a bowl, stem and water to produce smoke.

Bongs are typically made from plastic or glass and work by adding a herbal substance that sits on the stem, being lit. This draws air through the water and the user must inhale in the bong to draw bubbles up through the stem. Once there is enough smoke in the bong the stem can be separated.

This method system produces smoother smoke for the user than smoking directly using a Rizla.

The construction of the bong is similar to that of a hookah pipe, although bongs are more easily transportable and can be made from any airtight device where a stem can be added.

Percolator bongs are another form of traditional bong and are highly popular, due to an extra chamber that cools and filters the vapour, making for an even smoother smoke. A percolator bong generally has one tube in the chamber to do this extra cooling, but there are some types that have more than one and they are even more in demand.

Bongs have been used across the world for centuries and are believed to originate from China. They are also widely used in parts of Africa and Thailand, where often, the use of a bong is confined to a spiritual or religious ceremony.

A hookah pipe is used to smoke flavoured tobacco and was originally used in India and Persia. With the rise in popularity of legal highs, the use of hookahs has extended beyond these countries to Europe and South America. Other names for the pipe include Nargile and Luva or by the term Shisha, which is Persian for glass. Shisha bars became popular in the UK for a while.

Levels of insurance for accident or injury during cheap skiing holidays can vary considerably. A basic policy may offer £500,000 worth of cover and this could be sufficient in many cases. However if travelling to ski in North America it would be wise to consider taking out a premium policy with cover up to £2 million as medical expenses on that continent can be extremely high.

The most common injury on the piste is knee damage, such as tearing a ligament, and treatment for this in Europe is around £700 whereas in North America it is around £2,500. If costs of an air ambulance are factored in then bills can run into thousands of pounds.

Travel insurance policies for cheap skiing holidays are not solely for medical emergencies. They can cover closure of the piste, for whatever reason, the loss of baggage, personal liability, losing lessons or ski passes and cover for damaged, broken or stolen equipment.

If a skier owns their own equipment it will be important to factor in the cost of like for like replacement in the event of loss or theft. Good ski equipment is expensive and it is essential that sufficient cover is in place. Insurance policies must be bought before the holiday as insurers are always on the lookout for fraud. Buying a policy after an accident or incident is something the companies check for, so they are likely to ask for proof that insurance was purchased specifically for that holiday. Showing air tickets will prove the insurance is valid.

If you experience problems at work, it can be advisable to consult local solicitors in Leeds, or wherever you work. Employment law can be complicated and very few people fully understand their rights at work.

If as an employee, you believe that you have been treated unfairly, it is important that you approach a local solicitor and seek legal advice as early on as possible. In some circumstances there are particular steps that you have to follow. The solicitor will then be able to advise you on the options available to you, whether you have a case against your employer, help you decide whether to take the matter further and explain what you should do next.

Arranging a Visit and What the Solicitor Will Need

Once you have chosen from your local solicitors, in Nottingham for example, telephone the office and briefly explain to them your situation. Ask for a meeting and take any relevant documents with you when you attend. A solicitor may need information about:

•	How long you have worked for your employer.
•	Your salary.
•	Specific details about problems at work.
•	The events leading up to the situation.
•	Any relevant documents.
•	Any steps taken to solve the matter with your employer.

Follow procedures

It is important however, before you seek the advice from local solicitors that you have taken all the necessary steps within your workplace to deal with the problem at work, using the official channels of complaint/grievance. The timescale for this process can be lengthy, so be patient. Provide all of the necessary information and document everything as the process progresses. It may also be worth consulting other organisations before you consult a solicitor such as Citizens Advice, ACAS or a workers union if you are a member.
