Saving water – Part one

Around the home – water saving tips

Although we live on an island water still is a precious resource and needs to be conserved and used wisely because it’s not as abundant as many people think, in our everyday life we use a lot of water and a lot of energy which increases emissions of greenhouse gases contributing to climate change. Statistics show that the average person in England and Wales uses 150 litres of water a day and its estimated that by 2020, with increasing population and housing growth the demand for water could increase by 5% which means an extra 800 million litres of water a day will be needed.

In our home the majority of water is used for washing and toilet flushing as well as drinking and cooking and we are now using almost 50% more water than 25 years ago which is partly down to the use of power showers and household appliances. If you want to cut down on water consumption in your home there are a couple of things you can do:

Firstly make sure there are no leaks in your home, hidden leaks can waste a lot of water if they are not fixed they can also cause damage to your home and pipes especially in winter. Fix any dripping taps, doing this can save waste as it’s estimated a dripping tap 90 litres of water a week.

Small things that can save you water also include not running water while your brushing your teeth, taking short showers, the Soap & Glory 2 minute rinse challenge is an excellent opportunity to save water. When in your kitchen, don’t over fill you kettle just put in what you need, you will also save energy by doing this, only use your washing machine and dishwasher when you can put on a full load and keep boiled water from pan’s when you cook eggs and such like for watering indoor plants.

If you fit water saving devices into your toilet cisterns you can save 3 litres when flushing.

A few simple changes can save water and money in the long run.
