Tiling your bathroom – Part 3

As with the adhesive you are best off using a waterproof grout, you can now also get grout in various different colours so if you can match a colour to go with your tiles if you wish or stick with good old fashioned white grout. You need to allow at least 24 hours for the tile adhesive to set before grouting the tiles with a rubber-bladed spreader, making sure the joints are filled, use a damp sponge or cloth to wipe the grout from the surface of the tiles before it sets. Use a blunt-ended stick to smooth the joints and once it has dried you can then use a dry cloth to polish the face of the tiles and leave for about a week before using.

Now you need to seal around the fixtures and fittings, you should not use grout to do this because it will crack and lose its waterproof seal, instead use a silicon sealant compound, which you can buy in cartridges. As with the grout the sealants are now also available in a range of colours. Before you seal around the edges a useful tip is to fill your bath with water and leave in for 24hours whilst it’s drying, this will then help the sealant accommodate the weight of the water in the bath without stretching once done. You need to apply the sealant at an angle of 45 degrees, when done smooth over any ripples with a wetted teaspoon handle.

Its best to leave sometime between finishing the job to using the bathroom, normally a couple of days will suffice.
